Professional cycling is in a mess. Chechu says it, and increasingly, so does everyone else.
For the fan, our joy of the sport is now a test of endurance. With each twist and turn in a grinding, endless climb, with its false summits and precarious descents, at times, it’s just not fun.
I wonder what it’s like on the inside. For Chechu and his team-mates. Just how do they keep it together?

14th February and it’s St Valentine’s Day again.
Even my Spanish language calendar is exuding love at me. Te quiero, cariño. I love you, darling, it will whisper all day from the bookshelf.
Love and passion is a theme this morning on the forums and messages boards inhabited by fans of Alberto Contador and Team Astana.
In disbelief and anger at ASO’s decision yesterday to exclude Astana from the Tour de France, fans have laid bare their hearts and souls. I would walk to the ends of the earth and through hot coals for you.

Astana’s press officer will have spent this week fighting fires.
Since the organisers of Giro d’Italia 2008 announced on Saturday that the team has been left off the invitation list, there’s been a hot debate, in the media and on cycling forums.
RCS Sport cited various reasons for Astana’s exclusion, but the team’s doping problems in 2007 is most popular with pundits. “You don’t just wake up in the morning a changed person.”
Astana’s response has been measured. No over-reaction, just a quiet summation with an invitation to reconsider (and stealthy final jab with a sharp point). It’s not enough though.

This photograph of Chechu sits on our study bookcase. It arrived out the blue, a couple of years ago. Under Christine’s caring eye, Chechu had signed it, and written a message.
Para Nicky, con cariño. ¡Gracias por vuestro apoyo!

WOW, day eight of the Astana boys’ training camp – Go Astana! – in Albuquerque and I can’t believe I’m actually here, incredible.
